The Karnataka government is coming up with a proposal, after the implementation of which the Scheduled Caste community who have converted will not get the benefit of reservation. The government will recognize a person who has changed religion with that religion. At the same time, it has not been clarified whether the converted person will get the benefit of the minority community or not.
What did the Karnataka government say?
State Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J.C. According to Madhuswamy, if a person from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community changes his religion, he will not get the benefit of reservation. At the same time, the Scheduled Tribes will continue to get the benefit of reservation even after converting because they are not a caste but a tribe. Along with this, the government will recognize the converting person from the religion he has adopted.
However, it has not been confirmed whether those who have converted will be given the benefit of the minority community. At the same time, the matter of taking action against those who forcibly converts has also been said in this resolution.
Chief Minister interacts with the media
Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said in a conversation with the media in Belagavi, the 10-day legislature session will start from Monday. During this, this anti-conversion bill will be introduced in the current assembly. This proposed law will only prohibit forced conversions, and no action will be taken against those who convert on their own.
He said that at present the law department is studying it. It will be introduced in the assembly session only after getting approval from the state cabinet.
At the same time, on the possible reaction of the opposition, the Karnataka CM said that on every issue, someone is in support, someone is against and justified. The government will implement this proposal in public interest only after debate. Before introducing it, care will be taken that the religious sentiments of the people of any religion are not hurt. At the same time, Karnataka Congress has called it a big political gamble.
Central government’s warning to state governments
It is worth noting that in August this year, the central government had warned the governments of Muslim appeasement. When the government of Andhra Pradesh was planning to give benefits of the schemes of the Center to the people who have changed their religion, the Center had refused to do so. The central government had said that those who have changed their religion will neither get any benefit nor reservation for the scheduled castes.
Such an announcement has been made before
Let us tell you that earlier on February 2021, the Central Government had said in the Rajya Sabha that people belonging to Scheduled Castes, who converted to Islam or Christianity by converting, could not contest elections from reserved seats. He had also said that such people cannot even take advantage of the reservation given to the Scheduled Castes.
Other states have also taken action against forced conversion
Laws have already been enacted in many states like Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Jharkhand in view of the cases of forced conversions across the country.
