Angered by the Karnataka High Court’s decision on hijab, Muslim community leaders have called for ‘Karnataka Bandh’ today. Muslim leaders have announced a voluntary bandh. The entire state trade board has also been directed to participate in today’s bandh. Muslim leader Sagir Ahmed announced that he would hold a meeting with the clerics of the Muslim community on Thursday. He said that there is no need to force anyone for the bandh.
The court on Tuesday dismissed all the petitions filed by Muslim girl students seeking permission to wear hijab in educational institutions during their education period. The court ruled that the wearing of hijab by Muslim women is not a part of the religious practice required under Islam and the prescribing of school uniform is only a reasonable restriction, to which students cannot object. The bench of the court also said that the state government has the power to issue orders in this regard.
