Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday defended the Rs 2 hike in ‘Nandini’ milk prices. The CM said it was done keeping in mind the interest of farmers in view of the increased milk procurement. He reiterated that milk prices have not been hiked. Siddaramaiah said milk (production) was 90 lakh litres (per day) during the same time last year, now it is over 99 lakh litres. We have to buy milk from farmers, we cannot refuse them, milk is produced and it has to be sold in the market. So we have increased the quantity of half-litre milk packets by 50 ml. He said the quantity has been increased and the price has also been increased in proportion to the increased quantity.
gave this argument
According to the news, the price of 50 ml milk packet in half and one litre packets is Rs 2.10 and we have increased only two rupees, where have we increased the price of milk? Can we throw away the milk produced? Can we tell the farmers that we will not buy milk from them? According to Bhasha news, when he was asked whether restaurants are reportedly planning to increase the prices of coffee and tea, the Chief Minister said how will they increase, they can increase when the price of milk increases. The increase in milk prices has come after the increase in fuel prices.
The opposition is attacking the government
The opposition (BJP) is attacking the government over the price of milk. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that the move is aimed at benefiting farmers and prices should have been increased further. He said that this shows that the BJP is anti-farmer. The increased amount will be given to those farmers who are in trouble. KMF (Karnataka Milk Federation) is a farmers’ organization, it is to benefit the farmers. He said that according to me the prices should have been increased further.
Farmers are in distress, they are selling their cattle, unable to take care of them. He said the BJP should have demanded a hike in prices for the benefit of farmers. He asked the party to compare milk prices in other states.
