In fact, AIIMS, the country’s largest medical institute, does all kinds of organ transplants, including heart, lungs, kidney and liver transplants. But liver transplant in AIIMS is done in the same condition when the liver is received from a brain dead patient i.e. cadaver donor. Since the number of cadaver donations in the country is limited, liver transplants are very rare in AIIMS. Liver transplant is a surgery in which a living and medically fit person can donate a part of his liver and it does not cause any harm to him because the liver has the highest regenerating capacity and the donor’s liver regenerates over time. goes.
According to the doctor, some part of the liver is removed from the human body and transplanted into the patient’s body. This type of transplant involves two surgeries simultaneously and takes an average of 10 to 12 hours. One from whose body the liver is taken and the other from which it is transplanted. For this the medical team should be big, nurses and other staff should be trained. There should be better facilities for management. Till now the AIIMS administration was postponing live liver transplant, but now the administration has started an initiative regarding this.
Currently live liver transplant is being done in ILBS only.
At present, ILBS is the only hospital among government centers in Delhi, where liver transplant is being done through live donor. All other big private hospitals have this facility, but its cost comes up to Rs 25 to 30 lakhs. At the same time, an AIIMS official told that the cost of this surgery here has been estimated to be around Rs 7 lakh. Despite this, liver transplant facility will be available in only one third of the cost as compared to private hospitals. In this committee formed by AIIMS, Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University of Transplantation Science Dr. Pranjal Modi, AIIMS Director Dr. M Srinivas, HOD of GI Surgery Dr. Piyush Sahni and many other HODs have also been included.
