New Delhi: Maldives Foreign Minister Musa Jamir is on a visit to India. During this, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar met with his Maldivian counterpart Musa Jamir. During the conversation, the Indian Foreign Minister said that the development of relations between the two countries is based on ‘mutual interest and mutual sensitivity’. Zameer has come to Delhi as part of his first high-level visit after pro-China President Mohammed Muizzu took charge in Maldives.
What is India’s policy
“Being close and immediate neighbours, the growth of our relations is clearly based on mutual interests and mutual sensitivity,” Jaishankar said during talks with Maldives Foreign Minister Musa Zameer. He said, “As far as India is concerned, this is expressed in our Neighborhood First policy and SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) approach.
India always helped
Jaishankar said, “India is a major country providing development assistance to Maldives. Our projects have benefited the people of your country; (We) have contributed to the quality of life. “These range from infrastructure projects and social initiatives to medical, and health centres.” He said, “We have given financial assistance on favorable terms earlier also. India has been among the first to extend support to Maldives on many occasions.” “Our cooperation has also strengthened the security and welfare of your countries through shared activities, equipment, capacity building and training,” Jaishankar said.
India-Maldives relations have deteriorated
However, it is also worth noting that today the tension between India and Maldives is clearly visible from Russia. India has already withdrawn most of its military personnel from Maldives. Muizzu had set a deadline of May 10 for the withdrawal of Indian military troops from his country. (Language)
