Dubai: Strained relations between India and Maldives have been a topic of discussion in recent times. Due to the rift in relations, there has also been a decline in the tourism business of Maldives. Meanwhile, the Tourism Minister of Maldives urged Indians to contribute to the tourism-dependent economy of their country. Maldives Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal in an interview with ‘PTI Video’ stressed the historical ties between Maldives and India.
‘Economy dependent on tourism’
“We have a history,” Ibrahim Faisal said. Our newly elected government also wants to work together (with India). We always promote peace and friendly environment. Our people and government will warmly welcome the visiting Indians. As Tourism Minister, I want to ask Indians to please be a part of Maldives tourism. Our economy depends on tourism.
what happened after all
In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had shared some pictures and videos of Lakshadweep on ‘X’ on January 6, on which three ministers of Maldives made derogatory comments against India and Prime Minister Modi on social media. There was a strong reaction in India regarding this incident and people took to social media to boycott Maldives and not go there for tourism. After this, the distance in the relations between India and Maldives kept increasing.
Huge decline in the number of tourists
The tourism business has been significantly affected by the boredom of Indians in Maldives. This can be gauged from the fact that according to a recently published report, the number of tourists reaching Maldives from India has decreased by 42 percent in the first four months of this year as compared to the first four months of last year.
