Summary
After five phases in Uttar Pradesh, while in Uttarakhand, Punjab and Goa, the first phase of elections is to be held on Monday (February 28) in Manipur. Voting for the second phase will be held on March 5. Manipur has a total of 60 seats. Voting will be held on 38 seats in the first phase and 22 seats in the second phase.

Expansion
A total of 265 candidates are in the fray this time for 60 seats in Manipur. Of these, 56 i.e. 21% candidates have studied from fifth to 12th. There are 205 i.e. 77% candidates whose educational qualification is graduation. Four candidates are diploma holders. If we look at the age of the candidates, 32 i.e. 12% of the candidates are between 25 to 40 years of age, while there are 181 candidates whose age is between 41 to 60 years. The age of 50 candidates is between 61 to 80 years. There are also two candidates whose age is more than 80 years.
First know about the 2017 election results
In the 2017 assembly elections, out of 60 seats in Manipur, the Congress won 28 and the Bharatiya Janata Party won 21. The National People’s Front (NPF) and the National People’s Party (NPP) had four candidates each. In the other three seats, one each was won by Independents, LJP and Trinamool Congress candidates. However, later many Congress MLAs joined the BJP. Along with this, BJP formed the government with the help of other parties. Congress now has only 13 MLAs left.

This time the number of tainted contestants increased
There has been an increase in the number of tainted contesting elections in Manipur. In 2017, only 3% of the candidates had a criminal background, this time the figure has increased to 20%. JDU has given tickets to 29% of the tainted people. Congress is at number two and BJP is at third. 23% of Congress candidates and 22% of BJP candidates have criminal background. NPP i.e. National People’s Party has nominated 13% of the tainted candidates.
What kind of allegations have been made?
Five candidates have been accused of harassment of women. One of them is also facing rape case.
Two candidates have been booked for murder. Seven candidates have been booked for attempt to murder.
Crorepati candidates also increased this time
There has also been an increase in the number of crorepati candidates in this election as compared to 2017. In 2017, 31% of the candidates who contested the elections were crorepatis, this time 54% of the candidates are crorepatis. Most NPF ie Naga People’s Front (NPF) has 80%, National People’s Party 71%, BJP 68% and Congress 57% are crorepatis. JDU has also given tickets to 50% of crorepatis.
Congress candidate richest
Alfred Kangam S Arthur of Congress is contesting from Ukrul seat. Alfred has assets worth Rs 51 crore. Independent candidate Sapam Nishikant Amir is second in the list of candidates from Keishamthong assembly seat in Imphal West. Nishikant has assets worth Rs 29 crores.
JD(U) candidate Suresh Singh, who is contesting from Uripok seat in Imphal West, is the third richest candidate. Suresh has total assets of Rs 18 crores.

These five seats are in the Red Alert Zone
Five out of 60 seats are in the red alert zone. These include Kairao, Lamalai and Andro in Imphal East, Khangabok and Thoubal seats in Thoubal. There are three or more candidates with criminal background.
