new Delhi . Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called for stepping up efforts to conserve water, so that every drop of water can be saved along with recycling and reuse. Addressing the countrymen through his monthly radio program ‘Mann Ki Baat’, he said, “We all have to give equal emphasis on water recycling. The water used at home can be used for gardening.”
Modi further said that he has high hopes for this act of saving water from children as they have made cleanliness a movement and they can help save water by becoming ‘Water Warriors’.
Stating that water conservation and conservation of water sources have been a part of the society in our country, the Prime Minister said that he is happy that many people in the country have made water conservation a life mission. Modi cited the example of Arun from Chennai, who has been campaigning to clean up ponds and lakes in his area and has already successfully worked on 150 ponds and lakes.
Modi also cited Rohan Kale of Maharashtra, who has been campaigning for the protection of hundreds of stepwells in the state.
On Gujarat’s ‘Jal Mandir Scheme’, Modi said that these stepwells, popularly known as ‘vavs’, have played a big role in the protection of these wells.
He further added, “Many stepwells were revived all over Gujarat. It also helped a lot in raising the water level in these areas. You can also run similar campaigns by building check dams or rainwater harvesting at the local level. Or are making at least 75 Amrit Sarovar in every district of the country in the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.
He cited the example of ‘vessel for the water of life’ by Mupattam Sree Narayanan of Kerala.
Appreciating Narayanan’s initiative, Modi said, “Mupattam Sri Narayanan ji is running a campaign to distribute earthen pots so that the animals and birds do not remain thirsty during the summers. In summers they used to get upset seeing the plight of the animals and birds. Then he thought why not start distributing earthen pots himself so that others would be left with only the task of filling those pots with water.
“During this summer, this work of Narayanan will surely inspire all of us and we will also arrange water for our animal and bird friends this summer,” Modi said.
