Modi government introduced PM-CM removal bill, questions raised on political strategy related to Kejriwal

The Modi government has brought a bill to remove the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers and Ministers from their posts after being in jail for more than 30 days due to serious allegations, which has created a ruckus. On Wednesday, when Amit Shah introduced this bill in the Lok Sabha, the entire opposition including Congress, SP, AIMIM strongly opposed it. The opposition alleges that after the law is enacted by the law, the central government will target the states where the opposition parties are in power, while according to the law, until the accused is proved guilty, it is considered innocent. Currently, the bill has been sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), where the MPs of both the ruling and the opposition will consider the provisions of the Bill and then an attempt can be made to pass it in the next Parliament session. After the introduction of this bill, questions are being raised as to why the government decided to bring it. The reason behind this is being told to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Tamil Nadu minister Senthil Balaji.

What is the relationship between Kejriwal and Balaji?

Arvind Kejriwal is the former Chief Minister of Delhi, while Senthil Balaji is the former minister of the Tamil Nadu government. However, a special connection between the two is that both were accused of serious corruption and then went to jail, but they did not resign from the post for a long time. Kejriwal was arrested in Delhi’s alleged liquor scam before the Lok Sabha elections last year and he ran the government from jail for a long time. NDTV quoted government sources as saying, “The central government decided to enact a law to remove the CM and ministers living in jail for more than a month due to not resigning Kejriwal even after his arrest.” Several ministers of the Aam Aadmi Party were arrested in Delhi’s alleged liquor scam. Kejriwal was arrested in March. It was believed that he would resign from his post after his arrest, but it did not happen. He ran the government from jail itself and when he came out of jail, he resigned as CM and submitted the command of the post of Chief Minister to Atishi. Government sources said that when Kejriwal decided to run a government from jail and refused to resign, the government wanted to bring this law, but at that time the opposition would present it as a politics of revenge. For this reason, the government waited and now this bill has been brought in the monsoon session.

Balaji’s case also brought the government into action

At the same time, former Tamil Nadu minister Senthil Balaji was also arrested in a corruption case in 2023, but even then he remained a minister without any department. The Madras High Court also had to object to this, after which he resigned. However, he was again given a ministerial position as soon as he got the bail. But during a hearing, when the Supreme Court threatened him to resign or cancel the bail, he quit his post. A government source said that there is a need to end this joke. Due to this, the government has now brought the removal bill of PM-CM and ministers. However, since the constitution amendment requires a two-thirds majority, it seems difficult to pass this bill in Parliament. If the government wants to pass this bill, then it will have to be supported by the opposition. However, given the level of opposition MPs, it is difficult to say whether they will agree on the existing provisions of the bill.
