A massive fire broke out in this building in Kuwait.
Dubai/Kuwait City/New Delhi: Most of the people who died in a massive fire in a multi-storey building housing foreign workers in southern Kuwait are reported to be Indians. The death toll in the fire has risen from 41 to 49. More than 50 people have been injured. Officials said that most of the people died due to suffocation from smoke while they were asleep. They said that many people were rescued. They said that the fire broke out in the kitchen of a six-storey building in Mangaf area of Kuwait’s southern Ahmadi governorate. They said that it is said that 195 workers of the same company lived in the building. PM Modi held an emergency meeting in Delhi on the entire incident. He also announced compensation.
The interior ministry said in a statement that the death toll from the fire has reached 49, the Kuwait Times newspaper reported. The ministry said personnel from the criminal evidence department were currently working on identifying the deceased at the scene and determining the cause of the fire. It said strict measures would be taken against building owners who violated the law. “Unfortunately, we received a report of a fire in the Mangaf area at exactly 6:00 a.m. (8:30 a.m. IST),” Major General Eid al-Owaihan, head of the interior ministry’s general criminal evidence department, said. The dead were mostly Indian nationals from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and other north Indian states, aged between 20 and 50, the English daily Arab Times quoted him as saying.

The building in question was rented by the NBTC Group. Sources said some nationals of other countries were also among the dead. They said five firefighters were injured during the rescue operation. The Indian Embassy in Kuwait said in a post on ‘X’, “In connection with the tragic fire accident that hit Indian workers today, the Embassy has issued an emergency helpline number: +965-65505246. All concerned are requested to connect to this helpline for updated information. The Embassy is committed to provide all possible assistance.
PM Modi and Foreign Minister Jaishankar have expressed grief
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is deeply saddened by the fire incident in Kuwait. He has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths. He has also immediately sent one of his Union Ministers to Kuwait City to help the Indians. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has also expressed deep condolences over the incident. He has also assured all possible help to Indians. Let us tell you that 21 percent (10 lakh) of Kuwait’s total population and 30 percent (about nine lakh) of its labor force are Indians.
The Prime Minister announced compensation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday chaired a review meeting following the death of several Indians in a fire in Kuwait and directed officials to provide all possible assistance. An official statement said that Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh is going to Kuwait to monitor the relief operations and to bring back the bodies soon. Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. He wished the injured a speedy recovery. Modi also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased Indian nationals from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund. The statement said that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Deputy Foreign Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Pramod Kumar Mishra, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, along with other senior officials were present in the meeting.
Kuwaiti leaders also expressed condolences
Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah condoled the deaths and wished the injured a speedy recovery. Eyewitnesses said they were terrified to see flames engulfing the building. One of these eyewitnesses recalled the incident and said that a person jumped from the fifth floor of the building and died tragically after hitting the edge of the balcony. (Language)
