Mumbai Mumbai Police has taken action against two mosques for violating noise pollution norms. Noorani Masjid in Bandra West and Muslim Cemetery Masjid in Santacruz West will face action under the Maharashtra Police Act and Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
The police have also registered a case against the imams of two mosques — Anwar AM Shabbir Shah and Arif M Siddiqui, and M. Shoaib-e Sattar Sheikh, the managing trustee of the Santacruz mosque. They used loudspeakers for azaan in mosques between 10 pm and 6 am. Which is in violation of the order of the Supreme Court.
Of an estimated 1,140 mosques in Mumbai, more than 90 percent have either removed or muted their loudspeakers.
An official of the Additional Commissioner of Police said that some other mosques are being monitored by the police. Mosques are being closely monitored to ensure that they are strictly following the guidelines or not,
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena President Raj Thackeray had launched a statewide anti-loudspeaker campaign. Thackeray had threatened that loudspeakers should be removed from mosques, or else we would run Hanuman Chalisa in high volume in all temples.
