New Delhi. A major encounter took place today between security forces and Naxalites in Kanker district of Chhattisgarh. In this encounter, the soldiers killed more than 12 Naxalites including top Naxalite commander Shankar Rao carrying a reward of Rs 25 lakh. However, two police personnel have also been injured in this encounter, out of which an inspector has been shot in the leg. At present the condition of both is out of danger. Arrangements are being made to bring the injured soldiers to the hospital through helicopter. A huge quantity of weapons including four AK-47 rifles have been recovered from the possession of the slain Naxalites. Search operation is going on in the area.

Kanker SP Kalyan Alisela confirmed the encounter and said that we had received information that many armed Naxalites were hiding in the forest. After which a joint team was formed and a search operation was conducted in the forest and the Naxalites were surrounded. During this encounter, our team has killed more than 12 Naxalites. Top Naxalite commander Shankar Rao was also killed in this encounter, there was a reward of Rs 25 lakh on him. Police said that a huge quantity of weapons have been recovered from the possession of the slain Naxalites, including four AK-47 rifles. According to SP, the number of Naxalites killed may also increase.
It is noteworthy that before the Lok Sabha elections, the operation to arrest Naxalites has been intensified by the security forces. Earlier on April 6, three Naxalites were killed in an encounter by security forces in Bijapur. Many weapons including an LMG and an AK-47 rifle were also recovered from the slain Naxalites. On April 2, the police had killed 13 Naxalites, including three women Naxalites, in a fierce encounter in the forest of Korcholi and Lendra in Gangalur police station area of Bijapur. This encounter lasted for 8 hours. After this encounter, security forces had recovered many sophisticated weapons from the incident site.
