New Delhi. The Narcotic Control Bureau has made the fifth arrest in the Shaheen Bagh drug seizure case, where 50 kg of heroin and narcotics worth over Rs 100 crore were seized. Earlier, the NCB had arrested four people, including two Afghan nationals. The fifth accused Shamim Ahmed has been arrested from Laxmi Nagar.
“For the last two years, Shamim was sending illegal money of drug racket to Dubai through hawala. Every time he used to send Rs 40 to 50 lakhs through hawala. Shamim used to work as an agent in the vegetable market. He was arrested two years ago. The accused came in contact with Haider and joined more networks.”
The hawala racket of Dubai was controlled by a person named Shahid. Seeing Shamim having a good relationship with the middlemen working in Dubai, Shahid included him in his gang.
Last Thursday, following a tip-off, a team of NCB raided the designated places and recovered 50 kg of high quality heroin, 47 kg of suspected narcotics, Rs 30 lakh in cash, cash counting machine and other incriminating material. The banned material was kept inside bag packs and jute sacks.
“The seized heroin originated in Afghanistan and the drug money is suspected to have been routed through hawala. The confiscated material was packed in packets from an online shopping store,” the official said.
Sanjay Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Operations), NCB said, “During investigation, it was revealed that an Indo-Afghan syndicate based in Delhi/NCR or neighboring states appears to be linked to the case. But there was expertise in making heroin.”
According to him, these syndicates are smuggling into India through sea as well as land border routes.
The DDG had claimed, “Heroin was smuggled in along with various legitimate goods and later extracted from those goods by Indian counterparts with the help of some Afghan nationals.”
Several raids have been conducted since Thursday and some are still on to bust the entire network.
The syndicate was found to be linked to drug smugglers across northern India, including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Delhi.
