Bhartruhari Mahtab elected Protem Speaker
The controversy over the appointment of BJP leader and seven-time member Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro tem speaker is also likely to impact the session. The opposition has strongly criticised the move, which alleges that the government has ignored the claim of Congress member Kodikunnil Suresh for the post. The opposition party is planning to protest before the swearing-in ceremony on Monday.
Gate No. 2 opposition’s sit-in
On Monday, the MPs will gather near Gate No. 2 of the old Parliament House, a popular protest site, where the Gandhi statue once stood. The Gandhi statue was recently shifted along with 14 other statues in the complex. A leader said some MPs will carry copies of the Constitution of India and they will all walk to the Parliament House.
People’s support to the opposition for the constitution
Several opposition parties have claimed that the mandate of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is against the ruling BJP, even if it is able to form the government with the support of NDA allies. The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INA) has also claimed that people supported the opposition parties to ‘save the Constitution’.
