From July 1, food aggregators like Swiggy and Zomato will be required to list the nutritional values and food allergies of all items displayed on the menu. The new provision of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is applicable to those food business operators. Whose annual gross revenue is more than 20 crores. He has more than 10 outlets with license issued by central authorities.
FSSAI Chief Executive Arun Singhal said e-commerce food business operators such as Swiggy and Zomato will have to do menu labeling for the food they sell online. They must display the nutritional value to their FBOs. Like how many calories are in an order. Which oil, seasoning is used.
He said that with this customers will be able to know what kind of food they are ordering online. What is the nutritional and allergenic content in it. People should know what they are eating. Packaged foods have labels on them, but cooked dishes like dal makhani or butter chicken do not have them labeled. Cooked food menu labels will sensitize consumers to healthy food.
Apart from this, the restaurants should follow the rules over physical shops, Singhal said. Some food chains were voluntarily following the protocol at their physical outlets, but now it will be mandatory from July 1. According to another FSSAI official, the nutrition and allergen labeling of cooked food will differ from restaurant to restaurant. It would depend on the type of food. How is it cooked? What kind of material is being used. The apex food regulator has directed Swiggy and Zomato to upgrade the interface. So that FBOs can add nutritional information for each dish they sell.
