US NSA Jake Sullivan India Visit: India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on Monday held wide-ranging talks with his US counterpart Jake Sullivan and focused mainly on implementation of the ambitious ‘India-US Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies’ (ICET), bilateral defence ties and regional security situation. Sullivan is on a visit to Delhi from June 17-18, which is the first visit to India by a senior US Joe Biden administration official after the Modi government came to power for its third term.
Sullivan is accompanied by a high-level delegation
US National Security Advisor (NSA) Sullivan is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising senior US government officials and industry leaders. It is learnt that the NSAs of the two countries also discussed the proposed India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), the launch of which is getting delayed in view of the current situation in West Asia.
Bilateral issues were also discussed
People familiar with the Doval-Sullivan talks said the visit is an opportunity for the two NSAs to review progress and set new priorities for ICET. The two NSAs also discussed bilateral issues and reviewed the India-US partnership on regional and global issues of mutual interest. On Tuesday, the two NSAs will address participants at the India-US ICET roundtable with industry CEOs organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry. Doval and Sullivan have been holding regular consultations on bilateral, regional and global issues.
Sullivan met with the Foreign Minister
Sullivan’s visit to India comes three days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden held brief talks on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy’s Apulia region. The top Biden administration official also met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. He is also expected to meet Prime Minister Modi. “Delighted to welcome US NSA Jake Sullivan in New Delhi this morning. Had extensive discussions on a wide range of bilateral, regional and global issues,” Jaishankar posted on ‘X’. “I am confident that the India-US strategic partnership will go from strength to strength in our new term,” he said.
India and America are working in many areas
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden launched ‘ICET’ on the sidelines of the Quad summit in Tokyo in May 2022. Since then, the two NSAs have made coordinated efforts to identify areas of partnership on various aspects of new and emerging technologies, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, defence innovation, space and advanced telecommunications. The two sides have added new areas under ICET, including biotechnology, critical minerals and rare earth processing technology, digital connectivity, digital public infrastructure and advanced materials.
