Berhampur (Odisha): A BJP worker was killed and seven others were injured in a clash between supporters of the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Odisha’s Ganjam district. Police gave this information on Thursday. According to the police, this incident took place on Wednesday night in Shri Krishna Sarnapur village of Khallikote police station area due to putting up of posters for election campaign. A police officer said that the deceased has been identified as Dilip Kumar Pahana (28), a resident of the same village, who died during treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital. He said that according to preliminary investigation, there was a clash over putting up the poster of a candidate and both sides used sharp weapons. He said that the injured are undergoing treatment in the government hospital and their condition is said to be stable.
Vandalism of vehicles, road jam
Angry BJP workers allegedly vandalized several vehicles parked near the house of BJD candidate from Khallikote assembly seat and sitting MLA Suryamani Vaidya and blocked the road near the police station. They also demanded the arrest of the MLA and her husband Daitari Bahera. Baidya is contesting re-election from this seat while BJP has fielded former MLA Purna Chandra Sethi as its candidate. Khallikote assembly seat falls in Aska parliamentary constituency where voting for assembly and Lok Sabha elections will be held simultaneously on May 20. Khallikote seat is reserved for Scheduled Caste.
Large number of police forces deployed
Meanwhile, state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Nikunj Bihari Dhal expressed concern over the incident and asked the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police to immediately restore peace. He directed to take all measures to prevent violence during elections. A large number of police forces have been deployed in the village to control the situation.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condemned the incident and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased. “Deeply disturbed and saddened by the extremely unfortunate and tragic incident of violence in Khallikote area. Such incidents of violence have no place in our democracy. I strongly condemn this incident,” he posted on X. Patnaik wrote, “My deepest condolences to the family members who have lost their loved one. I pray for the speedy recovery of those who have been injured. I am sure that the police will bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice.” “Strict and exemplary action will be taken against him.” BJP President JP Nadda also expressed concern over the clash and said such incidents should not happen.
