Tokyo, July 24 (IANS)| India’s Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shatti advanced to the second round of the doubles event of the Tokyo Olympics badminton event, while B. Sai Praneeth lost in the first round of the men’s singles event. Satwik and Chirag defeated Chi Lin Wan and Yang Li of Chinese Taipei in their first round match played on Saturday.
Satwik and Chirag won the 69-minute match 21-16, 16-21, 27-25 in Group A. In men’s singles, however, India were disappointed as Praneeth was defeated by Misa Zilberman 21-17, 21-15 in a 40-minute match. Praneeth, who won a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships in Basel, was seeded 13th for the event but lost 0-2 to an unseeded player. In the doubles section, the Indian pair won the first game but then the Chinese Taipei pair made a comeback. In the final game, both the pairs had a close fight but in the end the Indian pair won. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals.
