Beat the Jamaican player in the plus 91 kg weight category
Tokyo, July 29 (IANS)| India’s super heavyweight boxer Satish Kumar has reached the quarter-finals of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics here. In the quarter-finals, Satish will take on defending world champion Bakhudir Jalolov of Uzbekistan on Sunday. Satish defeated Ricardo Brown of Jamaica 4-1 on Thursday in the last-16 round match of the plus 91kg weight category.
Making his Olympic debut at the age of 32, Satish won the super heavyweight bout with a split decision decision at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Arena. The opening round saw a tough fight between the two, with Brown constantly trying to distance himself from the Indian boxer to avoid an attack. Satish, on the other hand, managed to avoid the Jamaican boxer’s punches. The Indian was able to impress all the five judges thanks to his superior game, scoring 10 points from all the judges.
This was also Brown’s Olympic debut match, where he remained aggressive from the start, but could not trouble Satish much. The Indian boxer put up a brilliant defense and made timely hooks and jabs. However, Satish suffered a minor cut on his right eye and he immediately got medical help. As the match progressed to the final round, both super heavyweight boxers slowed down a bit due to fatigue.
After winning the first two rounds, Satish continued his defensive strategy in the third. However, Brown did better in this round. He targeted the Indian boxer several times with a left hook and body punch. However, this was not enough for Jamaica and Asian Championship bronze medalist Satish walked out of the ring with a win.
