Tokyo, Aug 4 (IANS) | India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra boosted India’s medal hopes by qualifying for the final with a throw of 86.65m in the qualification round at the Tokyo Olympics here on Wednesday. Neeraj finished first in Group A of the qualification round. He left behind Germany’s Johannes Wetter, who is considered a strong contender for the gold medal. Johannes too, however, achieved automatic qualification with a throw of 85.64m. In the javelin throw event, any athlete could reach the finals by achieving a qualifying mark or finishing in the top-12. At the end of the qualification round, seven athletes from Group A and five from Group B qualified. Another javelin thrower from India, Shivpal Singh, threw his best throw of 76.40 in the first attempt in Group B qualification and failed to qualify for the final. His other two attempts were 74.80 and 74.81 meters respectively.
Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan topped Group B with a throw of 85.16m. Neeraj started his season with a new national record of 88.07m at the Indian Grand Prix in March and followed it up with another commendable performance in the Federation Cup with a throw of 87.80m.
