Olympics (Women's Hockey): Third consecutive defeat of Indian team

Now both matches have to be won to win in the quarter finals.

Tokyo, July 28 (IANS) | Martin Hannah scored two goals as Great Britain thrashed the Indian team 4-1 in the Pool A match of the group stage at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics women’s hockey event here. This is India’s third consecutive defeat in this Olympics. India were defeated by Netherlands 5-1 in the first match and 2-0 by Germany in the second match. India will now have to win both their remaining matches to qualify for the quarter-finals.

The disappointing performance of Indian women’s hockey led by captain Rani Rampal continued in the third match and could not make an impact. Hannah scored two goals for Great Britain, ranked fifth in the world rankings, while Lily Owsley and Grace Balsaddon scored one each. Sharmila Devi scored the only goal for India.

Earlier, Hannah scored in the second minute to give the team a 1-0 lead. Hannah then made another goal in the second quarter in the 19th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. However, India bounced back and Sharmila scored in the 23rd minute to take the lead to 1-2. Great Britain once again dominated in the third quarter and Lillee scored in the 41st minute to make the score 3–1. In the fourth and final quarter, Balsadón scored in the 57th minute to give the team a one-sided victory. India will take on Ireland in their fourth Pool A match on July 30.
