The Election Commission of India has decided to conduct re-polling in six polling stations of Outer Manipur Lok Sabha seat of Manipur. Voting was held in the second phase at all these centers on April 26, but due to violence, the Election Commission has declared the voting of April 26 invalid. Now re-polling will be held here on April 30 at six polling stations. The third phase of voting is to be held on May 7 and the Election Commission also has time to conduct re-polling.
There is continuous violence in Manipur due to tension between the Meitei and Kuki communities. For this reason, the Election Commission is facing a lot of trouble in conducting voting here. There are two Lok Sabha seats in the state and voting will be held here for the fourth time within 12 days. Voting was held for the first time in Manipur on 19 April. After this, re-polling was held on 22 April at 11 booths. The second phase of voting took place on 26th April and now on 30th April also voting is to be held at six polling booths here. Voting time has been kept from 7 am to 4 pm.
Why is re-polling happening?
Violent clashes have been going on between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur for the last one year. Keeping this in mind, the Election Commission had decided to conduct voting on the Outer Manipur seat here in two phases. This was the only Lok Sabha seat in the country, where voting was to be held in two phases. However, violence broke out in the first phase of voting on April 19 and the Election Commission had to conduct re-polling in 11 booths in interior Manipur. After this, voting took place in outer Manipur and there was a lot of violence here too. EVMs were broken and videos of voters being threatened also surfaced. For this reason, re-polling is being conducted here.
