Parthasarathy said, watch and wait
G Parthasarathy, who has been India’s envoy to many countries including Pakistan, said it was a complicated situation for India and the government would have to take a close decision on it. He told PTI that I myself believe that it will be voted on in the United Nations Security Council. It remains to be seen whether we oppose it or avoid it.
When asked whether India would have to maintain a balance, he replied in the affirmative. We have to take a decision and see how others react, he said. China is also acting cautiously at this time. So we have to find out how others react.
Parthasarathy, who has also lived in Moscow, said that India should look at the origin of the situation. He said that Russia has stood by India in very difficult times. He said that this is a difficult step for India as it has to strike a balance between what the world thinks and what its people think. In fact, Russia remains a very reliable friend. He said that the West has also not been innocent in the whole matter and pushed Russia to the corner through NATO.
Sood said, need for sensitive diplomacy
Former Indian diplomat Rakesh Sood also emphasized that India needs diplomatic cleverness and sensitive diplomacy to deal with the current situation. Sood said that ultimately any policy has to serve the interests of India. Russia has been a steadfast partner of India for decades and therefore, it will be difficult for us to support Russian action or strongly criticize Russian action.
Whatever concerns we have, we will share them privately with the Russian leaders. But in no case do we as a country accept unilateral sanctions. We have always spoken against unilateral sanctions. The sanctions that have been imposed (against Russia) are not imposed by the United Nations. Sood said that there are many diplomatic situations which cannot be easily judged on the basis of black and white. At the same time, Meera Shankar, who was India’s ambassador to the United States between 2009 and 2011, said that right now the government has adopted a wait-and-see approach.
