According to KCNA news agency, 17,400 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in the country, taking the total number of infections to 520,000. In the last 24 hours, 21 victims have died. North Korea reported its first coronavirus death on Friday. Six people were confirmed dead here yesterday. A ‘Major National Emergency’ has been declared in the country.
Crisis Politburo meeting
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), top officials, including the country’s leader Kim Jong Un, held a Crisis Politburo meeting to discuss the outbreak. After the meeting, it was announced that a maximum emergency virus control system would be implemented. Before this, North Korea has been describing itself as a country free from the corona virus.
Signs of Omicron variant in infected
In addition, the North Korean leader has increased vigil on all fronts. Strict vigil has been ordered on the air and sea borders. Korean officials said samples collected from patients with fever indicated they were infected with the Omicron variant. It stressed that the aim is to contain the spread of the virus.
