President Draupadi Murmu on Thursday presented the Padma Shri award to disabled social activist Dr KS Rajanna, who lost both his arms and legs due to polio. After receiving the honour, Rajanna said that the disabled should also be given a chance and they should not be considered weak. He said, “At the time of Padmashree award, Prime Minister Modi addressed him as Rajanna ji.” It makes me feel very happy that now no one says disabled but Divyang. This makes me feel respected now.”
While going to receive the honour, Rajanna also went to greet PM Modi and Shah. Rajanna was also seen saying something while holding PM Modi’s hand. This meeting of a few seconds is making the people watching emotional. After meeting PM Modi, when Rajanna proceeded towards the President’s chair, he bowed his head and saluted the stage. On the stage, Rajanna bowed his forehead and saluted the stage. When Rajanna was honored, the dignitaries and guests present at the function kept clapping continuously.

KS Rajanna’s life has been one of great struggle. While talking to India TV, he advocated giving opportunities to the disabled. He told, “At the time of Padmashree award, Prime Minister Modi addressed him as Rajanna ji. It makes me feel very happy that now no one calls me disabled, I feel Divyang, which makes me feel respect. Rajanna told that he has also talked to the Prime Minister about giving opportunities to the Divyang.

In view of his service spirit, in 2013 the Karnataka Government appointed him as the State Commissioner for the Disabled. KS Rajanna lost his hands and legs due to polio in his childhood. He learned to walk on his knees. He used his physical limitations as inspiration and decided to work for the disabled, considering himself no less than anyone. After joining social service, he worked continuously and in 2013, the Karnataka government made him the State Commissioner for the Disabled. Rajanna, a resident of Bengaluru, Karnataka, was given this post for three years, but he was removed before the end of his tenure. After some time he was given the post again.
