Earlier this year, he won a gold medal in the high jump T47 category at the Faza World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai.
Tokyo,(IANS)| India’s para high jump athlete Nishad Kumar clinched a silver medal in the men’s high jump T47 event at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics here. Nishad finished second with a jump of 2.6m. With Nishad winning silver, India won its second medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. Before her, Para table tennis player Bhavina Patel had won the silver medal in the women’s singles class 4 category today.
Hailing from Una in Himachal Pradesh, 21-year-old Nishad started with 1.89m. He jumped 1.94m in second attempt and 1.98m in third attempt. Nishad’s best was 2.06m which he did in his fifth attempt. Nishad trained at the Sports Authority of India in Bangalore and is participating in his first Paralympic Games. A student of physical education at Lovely Professional University, Nishad started participating in para athletics from 2009 and won several medals at the national level.
Apart from Nishad, the gold medal in T46 category of this event was won by America’s Townsend Roderick who finished first with a jump of 2.15m. Another Indian athlete Ram Pal finished fifth in this event with a jump of 1.94m. Nishad had earlier won a gold medal in the high jump T47 category at the Faza World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai earlier this year.
