Manila: The army has achieved great success in Southern Philippines. In a violent clash here, soldiers have killed the commander of a small Muslim rebel group and 11 of his members. The Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters is one of the few armed groups still waging a separatist insurgency in the southern Philippines.

Brigadier General Jose Vladimir Cagaara said seven soldiers were also injured in an hour-long clash with suspected members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters on Monday in an interior area of Datu Saudi Ampatuan town in Maguindanao del Sur province. Kagara said Mohideen Animbang, a key commander of the rebel group, his brother Saga Animbang and 10 other suspected rebels were killed in the encounter. About a dozen weapons have also been recovered from the spot.
Advice was given to surrender
“The group has long been notorious for carrying out bombings, attacking army and police posts and extorting bus companies,” regional army spokesman Lt. Col. Dennis Almoreto told The Associated Press by telephone.
