Sydney: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached the Australian city of Sydney on Monday as part of the third and final leg of his three-nation tour. Modi is on a visit to Australia from May 22 to 24 as the guest of the Australian Government. Modi will hold talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese here and also participate in an Indian community event in Sydney. Modi tweeted, ‘Warm welcome by the Indian community on reaching Sydney. Looking forward to various programs during the next two days. PM Modi also said that he wants to take relations with Australia to a new level.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the Indo-Pacific region is facing many challenges like climate change, terrorism, security of sea lanes of communication and piracy and India believes that these can be resolved only through joint efforts. . In an interview to ‘The Australian’ newspaper, he said he wanted to take relations with Australia to the ‘next level’, including defense and security ties, to help ensure an ‘open and free’ Indo-Pacific. The newspaper quoted him as saying, “I am not the kind of person who gets satisfied easily.”

He said he wanted the two countries to move forward to harness the true potential of close defense and security ties amid growing defense ties. There is synergy in our strategic approach. “The high level of mutual trust between us has naturally translated into greater cooperation in defense and security matters,” he said. Our navies are participating in joint naval exercises.

Modi also dismissed suggestions that India’s “refusal” to criticize Russia would harm bilateral ties as Australia has been critical of Moscow over the Ukraine war. One advantage of being good friends is that we can discuss freely and appreciate each other’s point of view, the Prime Minister said. Australia understands India’s position and it does not affect our bilateral relations.

He hoped that the visit would help the two countries identify new areas of cooperation, including new technologies, clean energy, critical minerals, mining, cyberspace and building resilient supply chains for the movement of skilled professionals. The Prime Minister said that since his last visit, the bilateral relationship has ‘changed fundamentally’ from annual summits, economic cooperation and trade agreements, and comprehensive strategic partnership. People-to-people contacts continue to be a strong pillar of our partnership, he said. The number of Indian expatriate community in Australia has increased over the years.
