Dharwad. Police Inspector Sridhar Satre of Dharwad Rural Police Station has been suspended on Saturday for registering an FIR against Legislative Council Speaker Basavaraj Horatti.
Horatti was made the fifth accused in connection with a dispute over the management of an educational institution.
The matter was discussed at length in the council on Thursday and Friday with the legislators condemning the move by the police department to register an FIR against the Speaker. The MLC had demanded the suspension of the Superintendent of Police and Inspector of Police of Dharwad district, irrespective of the party line.
He said that this is a violation of the rights of the Speaker of the House. Director General of Police and Inspector General of Police (DG and IGP) Praveen Sood has issued the suspension orders.
The Akhil Karnataka Valmiki Nayak Mahasabha has filed a complaint against Horatti, the Legislative Council chairman and five others at the Dharwad rural police station in connection with a dispute over the management of an educational institution.
It was alleged that though Basavaraj Horatti is not the chairman of Sarvodaya Trust, he is misusing his authority and exercising the powers of the chairman.
He has also alleged that when the members of the Mahasabha went to the schools in Dharwad for inspection, Basavaraj Horatti’s followers assaulted him. The complaint also mentioned that the members were abused, casteist remarks were made on them and their car was damaged.
Earlier, the members of the Mahasabha held a press conference on 22 January and accused Basavaraj Horatti of arbitrariness in the affairs of the Trust.
He had alleged that an advertisement for recruitment of vacant posts in Sarvodaya Shiksha Trust was given on the instructions of Horatti and he was challenged to release documents of his authority over the trust.
