Odisha Assembly Elections 2024
The fight has become interesting at many places in the Odisha Assembly elections. In the election battle of BJP vs Congress in Ganjam district, brother is pitted against brother. The brothers, who face each other in Chikitti Assembly constituency, are sons of former Odisha Assembly Speaker Chintamani Gyan Samantrai. While BJP has given ticket to younger brother Manoranjan Dyan Samantarai, Congress has fielded his elder brother Ravindnath Dyan Samantarai. Chintamani, father of Manoranjan and Ravindanath, is the son of Gyan Samantarai. Chintamani has been a senior leader of Congress and has been elected MLA from Chikiti thrice. He has won the elections twice as an independent and once on Congress ticket.
BJD captures the seat on which elections are being fought.
Junior Samantrai has contested the assembly elections twice on Congress ticket. While his elder brother is contesting elections for the first time. Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has made Chinmayanand Shrirup Deb, son of state Urban Development Minister Usha Devi, its candidate from Chikiti assembly seat. Usha Devi is not contesting the elections this time. Usha Devi was elected MLA from this seat five times. Presently this seat is with BJD.
What does Rabindranath say
Rabindranath said that I have been active in Congress since the time of my father. So I got a ticket to contest elections from the party. This will be a contest between two ideologies and not between two brothers. Manoranjan claimed that he has been very active in politics for the last several years. That’s why BJP gave him the ticket. He said, “Some vested interests may have instigated my brother to contest elections on a Congress ticket to create unrest in the family.
Father will not promote sons
Chintamani Dyan Samantre said that due to ill health he will not be able to campaign for anyone. The 84-year-old Congress leader said that he is a Congressman and opposes the policies of the BJP. He said that my younger son’s decision to contest elections on BJP ticket was his own decision. In democracy we cannot impose our decisions on anyone.
