Rome: Pope Francis skipped the traditional Good Friday procession at a major art gallery in Rome, raising concerns about his health. The Vatican has informed about his not participating in the procession. Francis was expected to lead the ‘Way of the Cross’ procession that depicts the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. As soon as this program was about to begin, it was announced from the Vatican that Francis was monitoring the program from his home. This is the first time Francis has not attended the traditional event in his 11-year tenure as Pope.
Pope Francis is ill
Pope Francis, 87, is suffering from flu, bronchitis or a cold, the Vatican’s press office said in a statement. Over the past several weeks he has often asked one of his assistants to read his speeches aloud.
Completed the ceremony on Thursday
Earlier, Pope Francis washed and kissed the feet of 12 female prisoners in a Rome prison during a Thursday ritual to emphasize service and humility. Pope Francis completed the ritual while sitting in a wheelchair. At the Rebibia prison, women sat on a stool so that the Pope could easily perform the ceremonial rituals while seated in a wheelchair. When Francis washed the women’s feet, they cried.
‘Stay away from hypocrisy’
Pope Francis was recently suffering from a respiratory illness but looked healthy on Thursday and not only completed the ritual by bathing the feet of female prisoners but in his address he called on people to stay away from ‘hypocrisy’. He told the priests that whatever advice they give to the common people, they should adopt it in their spiritual life also and there should be no difference between the two. (AP)
