What’s new in the Lakhimpur case
The name of Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra had surfaced as an accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident. In February, the Allahabad High Court had granted bail to Mishra, but in April itself, the Supreme Court canceled Mishra’s bail, setting aside the High Court’s order. Also the accused was asked to surrender within a week. After this, Mishra surrendered on 24 April.
In fact, the families of those who lost their lives during the Lakhimpur Kheri incident had approached the apex court against the bail. Mishra was arrested after the incident on October 9.
In October last year, eight people, including four farmers, died in Lakhimpur Kheri. Mishra had allegedly rammed a car on farmers who were opposing the agriculture laws of the Centre. The apex court had constituted a committee headed by retired Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Rakesh Kumar Jain to probe the incident.
