New Delhi. The move of unity in opposition of West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee may get a major setback in the presidential election. The reason is that a party may decide to walk away from the path of opposition unity. In such a situation, there is a possibility of further reduction of votes for Mamta and Yashwant Sinha, the joint candidate of the opposition. The party which seems to be preparing to walk away from Mamta’s path of opposition unity, its name is Jharkhand Mukti Morcha JMM. All the MLAs of JMM are now raising their voice that only NDA’s presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu should be supported. Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren has also not given any statement in favor of opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha till now.
Mithilesh Kumar Thakur, a minister in the JMM government, told the media that a meeting of the party was about to take place. There will be a discussion on giving support for the presidency. At the same time, JMM’s MLA from Giridih Sudivya Kumar Sonu told a newspaper that his personal opinion is that tribal women have a chance to become the President for the first time, so this opportunity should not be let go. Sonu said that the Jharkhand government should support Draupadi Murmu. Another JMM MLA, Lobin Hembram, told the media that for the first time a tribal woman is in the fray for the President’s election and she is set to become the President. Still, whatever decision the party takes in the meeting, it will be accepted by them. Due to such statements of JMM MLAs, there is a lot of pressure on party supremo Shibu Soren and Hemant Soren to support Draupadi Murmu.
Let us tell you that no party can issue a whip under the rules in the election of the President. That is, MPs and MLAs can vote for whomever they want. In such a situation, even if the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha decides that Yashwant Sinha has to vote, then its MLAs and MPs can walk away from this opinion and no disciplinary action is possible against them.
