Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday hinted he would deal harshly with officers shirking their duties in the war with Russia. Zelenskyy and army chief Oleksandr Tsyarskyy met with troops in the eastern Donetsk region who have faced heavy Russian attacks in recent months. The president said he also discussed with local officials drinking water supplies, social issues, evacuation plans for civilians and the reconstruction of local housing units. He said in Kyiv he would talk to officials who should be here and in areas near the frontlines where people need urgent help.
Zelensky expressed surprise
President Zelensky said, “I am surprised to learn that some officers have not been here for six months or more.” He said that this would be discussed in detail and “I will give them appropriate instructions.” Zelensky has frequently visited the frontline areas during the war. He said that the purpose of his visit to the Donetsk region was to introduce Andril Hnatov, the new commander of the ‘Joint Forces Command’. Hnatov replaced Yuri Sodol, who was in this position since February 2023.
Russia dropped bombs
Ahead of Zelensky’s visit, Russian troops dropped a powerful bomb on the Donetsk town of Selidove, causing extensive damage to 34 residential units, six multi-storey buildings and administrative buildings, regional authorities said. However, no one was reported injured in these attacks. Regional head Vadim Filskin said that in the past 24 hours, Russian forces shelled 20 settlements in the Donetsk region, killing one person and injuring at least nine others. Officials said about 250 people have been evacuated from their homes in the Donetsk region since Tuesday. (AP)
