Public procurement of goods and services from the government e-market portal, GeM portal, has crossed the figure of Rs 9.82 lakh crore till July 30. This information was given to Parliament on Friday. The Government e-Market (GeM) portal was launched on August 9, 2016 for online purchase of goods and services by all central ministries and departments. According to the news of Bhasha, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasad said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha that GeM started its journey with a purchase of Rs 422 crore in the year 2016-17.
25,000 startups have been registered
According to the news, this figure crossed the level of Rs 4 lakh crore in the last financial year. He said that the cumulative gross trading value for goods and services on GeM since its inception is more than Rs 9.82 lakh crore by July 30, 2024. More than 1.63 lakh women-led MSEs (micro and small enterprises) and 25,000 startups have been registered on the GeM portal since its inception.
Over 6.2 million sellers and service providers
GeM has more than 63,000 government buyer organisations and more than 62 lakh sellers and service providers offering a wide range of products and services. South Korea’s KONEPS is the world’s largest such platform. Currently, GeM is ranked second. Government e-Marketplace GeM is a public procurement portal for procurement of goods and services for the Central Government and all State Government Ministries, Departments, Public Sector Units and Associates. The GeM portal seeks to make the public procurement process transparent, efficient and inclusive. It serves as a centralised and integrated public procurement platform for government buyer organisations and suppliers of goods and services
