Chandigarh: After a long fight, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has finally laid down his arms in front of state Congress unit chief Navjot Singh Sidhu. He has accepted the resignation of State Advocate General APS Deol. The formula for resolving this dispute has been stamped. The incident is being seen as a pact between Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and State President Navjot Singh Sidhu. Along with this, the condition that Navjot Singh Sidhu had set for the appointment of a new Advocate General to resume his work as the State President, has also been accepted.
Sidhu had resigned from the post of Punjab Congress President on 28 September. Two days ago, he withdrew his resignation, but on the condition that until Deol is not removed as AG and a panel is constituted to appoint a new Director General of Police (DGP), He will not take over.
Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Congress State President Navjot Singh Sidhu held a joint press conference. During this, Chief Minister Channi said that the resignation of Advocate General Deol has been accepted and Punjab will get a new Advocate General tomorrow. He said that the DGP of Punjab would also be removed. In the press conference, CM Channi said that 36 thousand contractual workers of the state would also be made permanent.
Navjot Sidhu has been raising questions over Deol’s appointment ever since he was given the charge of the Advocate General of Punjab. Deol was the lawyer of former Director General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini in the Kotkapura police firing incident in 2015. Only last week, Deol had accused Sidhu of obstructing the functioning of the state government and his office as well as “spreading misinformation to gain political mileage”. Deol had said that Navjot Singh Sidhu was obstructing the functioning of the government and the office of the Advocate General. He is spreading misinformation to gain political advantage over his political allies. He had also said that an attempt was being made to politicize the Constitutional Office of the Advocate General of Punjab for selfish political gains in view of the impending elections in Punjab.
