Chandigarh. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday called on Punjab DGP V.K. Bhawra to set up an Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) headed by an ADGP-rank officer.
CM Mann has taken this decision to wipe out the network of gangsters operating across the state, so as to create a sense of security among the citizens.
Chairing a high-level meeting, Mann emphasized the need to eradicate organized crime. Along with this, he also emphasized that ensuring law and order is his topmost priority to restore the confidence of the people in the police machinery.
In recent times, several cases of murder of famous players during kabaddi matches, incidents of murder due to enmity between political activists and gang wars have come to the fore in Punjab. Along with this, drug trade has also been in trend in Punjab for a long time. The police force has been assured of all necessary manpower, latest equipment and information technology apart from adequate funds to break this nefarious nexus.
Pointing out further, the Chief Minister said that the AGTF would have an integrated collection of intelligence information, operations and registration of FIRs, investigation and prosecution on the lines of similar specialized units in the country.
Directing the Commissioners of Police and SSPs to make coordinated efforts against organized crime, Mann said that new police stations with state-wide jurisdiction over organized crime would be notified soon, so that the terror and fear instilled in the minds of people by gangsters would be curbed. can be removed.
Mann categorically stated that he has directed the prison department to keep a close watch on the activities of the gangsters lodged in various jails and any laxity in this regard will not be tolerated.
Sharing his personal experience in bringing down the crime rate drastically in Sangrur district, Mann said that as a Member of Parliament, he has contributed from his MP-LAD fund through Wi-Fi CCTVs attached to local police stations in major cities of the district. Initiated the installation of cameras.
“Under this project, high-resolution cameras were installed at a nominal cost, allowing round-the-clock surveillance and creating a sense of security among the general public,” Mann said.
Expressing deep concern over the loss of precious lives in fatal road accidents every day, Mann said that more than 5,500 people lose their lives in these accidents, besides about 1.5 lakh people get injured due to this.
He asked the DGP to come out with a comprehensive proposal to create a separate wing of the road patrolling police, dedicated to control traffic jams effectively. Along with this, emphasis has also been laid on ensuring timely medical aid to accident victims, so that human life can be saved.
He said that after the death of famous TV personality Jaspal Bhatti in a road accident, 136 black spots were identified but unfortunately nothing concrete was done at the ground level.
He also stressed on the need to have a first aid kit in every police vehicle so that medical aid can be given to any injured on the road.
Mann also asked all the police officers posted in the field and headquarters to maintain discipline so as to win the trust of the people.
These things will eventually help the police force improve its image, he added.
Earlier, welcoming the Chief Minister, DGP Bhawra assured him that the entire police force would perform its duties with utmost integrity, honesty and professional commitment to live up to the expectations of the general public.
After Special DGP (Intelligence) Prabodh Kumar mentioned various demands of the police department to meet the emerging challenges of law and order especially in the wake of cyber crimes, Chief Secretary Anirudh Tiwari informed that work is already in this direction. being done. Along with this, he asked the DGP to send the complete proposal to the Finance Department, so that the required budget allocation can be done in the annual budget of the state.
