Russia sanctions after attack on Ukraine
After ordering a special military operation against Ukraine on Thursday, the US and its allies decided to confiscate the assets of four major Russian banks, impose export controls and sanction oligarchs close to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The sanctions would undermine Russia’s aerospace industry and its space program.
Russian space agency chief said partnership with America is impossible
Dmitry Rogozin, director general of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, was quoted as saying by Russia-run Tass news agency that US participation in the project is impossible due to sanctions. Rogozin said that Russia would carry out the mission either alone or with the participation of China. The head of the Russian space agency said on Friday that he had given instructions on Friday to begin talks with Beijing on mutual technical assistance for all space research missions.
Russia used veto power at UNSC
On Friday, Russia used its veto power in the United Nations Security Council to block a resolution proposed by the US and other Western countries to condemn Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. India, China and the UAE abstained from voting on the resolution. Roscosmos has suspended its cooperation with European partners on space launches from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou in response to EU sanctions following Russia’s military offensive against Ukraine, and its withdrawal from French Guiana in response to EU sanctions. Technical personnel have been recalled.
Russia and the US are major participants in the ISS programme, which also includes several European countries such as Canada, Japan, France, Italy and Spain. Four NASA astronauts, two Russian cosmonauts and one European cosmonaut are currently working here.
