'Rahul should not forget Rajiv Gandhi's reign', TMC on doctor murder case

Kolkata. The Trinamool Congress on Wednesday criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor here, saying he should keep in mind the “dismal record” of women’s safety during the previous Congress governments at the Centre. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said the attempt to protect the accused instead of providing justice to the victim raises serious questions on the hospital and the local administration.

Rahul, who has been the Congress president, said that the entire country is shocked by the heinous incident of rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. He said that the revelation of the cruel and inhuman act done with her has created an atmosphere of insecurity among the doctor community and women. Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh called the allegations baseless.

Ghosh said, “He should check the facts before making such comments. He should not forget the dismal track record regarding the safety of women during the reign of (former Prime Minister) Rajiv Gandhi and the (previous) Congress governments at the Centre.”

Rahul Gandhi, who was the president of Congress, had said that the entire country is shocked by the heinous incident of rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. He said that the revelation of the cruel and inhuman act done with her has created an atmosphere of insecurity among the doctor community and women. He said, “This incident has forced us to think that if doctors are not safe in a place like a medical college, then with what confidence should parents send their daughters outside for studies. Why are the strict laws made after the Nirbhaya incident also unsuccessful in preventing such crimes.”

He said that every party, every section will have to hold serious discussions and take concrete measures on the ever-increasing incidents against women from Hathras to Unnao and Kathua to Kolkata. Rahul Gandhi said, “I stand with the victim’s family in this unbearable pain. They should get justice at all costs and the culprits should be given such a punishment that it is presented as an example in the society.”

The body of the female postgraduate trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of the hospital on the morning of August 9. A volunteer was arrested on Saturday in connection with the crime. The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered the investigation of the case to be handed over from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
