Power generation plants in many parts of the country are facing coal crisis. Railways is transporting 15 percent additional coal to deal with this and to supply coal. In this connection, the Railways has decided to cancel about 1100 trains for the next 20 days. This includes both Mail Express and Passenger trains. 500 trips of express trains, while 580 trips of passenger trains have been cancelled.
According to the railways, these trains have been canceled so that the coal laden goods trains being supplied to the thermal power plant can be easily given way, so that the coal can reach on time. Railways has already canceled 670 passenger trains for the next one month. So that the frequency of goods trains carrying coal can be increased. Due to this, people commuting from coal producing states like Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand are facing a lot of inconvenience.
It is worth noting that in many states including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, electricity problem had arisen due to coal crisis. According to VK Tripathi, Chairman, Railway Board, “We can say that the demand and consumption of coal has increased by 20 per cent since last year. In the month of April 2022, we transported 15 per cent more coal as compared to April 2021 The demand and consumption of coal has increased significantly as compared to last year, so we are transporting more quantity of coal. We are operating additional coal rakes and on higher priority as compared to mail and express trains.”
On this issue, Union Energy Minister RK Singh had also admitted that there is a shortage of coal in many states. “The import of coal has been affected by the Russia-Ukraine war,” he said.
Apart from this, it is being told that due to non-payment of dues to coal companies and strike in Jharkhand, coal crisis has arisen.
