Beijing floods kill 20 people
At least 20 people have died and 27 others are missing in floods triggered by days of heavy rains in areas around the Chinese capital Beijing. Government media gave this news on Tuesday. State broadcaster CCTV said railway stations had to be closed due to heavy rains and those affected were sheltered in schools. It said flood water has filled people’s houses and roads have been washed away.
In 1998 flood caused havoc
The weather in Beijing is generally dry with moderate rainfall. In such a situation, the heavy rains that have occurred in the past are unusual for here. Other parts of northern China rarely receive such heavy rain. Chinese President Xi Jinping issued an order for local governments to exert “full force” in rescuing stranded people and minimizing property damage. The most devastating flood in recent history in China occurred in 1998 when 4150 people died.
