3-year-old boy swallowed a 5cm-length idol
Bengaluru, July 24 (IANS)| A three-year-old boy swallowed an idol of Lord Ganesha about 5 cm in length in Bengaluru, Karnataka, but was saved due to timely treatment. Three-year-old Basava was taken to Manipal Hospital located on Old Airport Road on Friday. The child swallowed the idol while playing. After this his chest started hurting and it was difficult to swallow even saliva. First his X-ray was done, which showed in which part the idol was stuck.
Doctors resorted to a flexible endoscopic approach to remove it. She was taken for endoscopic within an hour and then the idol was safely removed from her body after she was sedated. After three hours, the child was allowed to feed. The child also showed a lot of bravery during this period and contributed fully to the doctors in his treatment without complaining of any pain. After that he was discharged till evening.
Pediatric Gastroenterologist Dr. Shrikant K.P. told IANS that “The statue must have caused injury to the esophagus. This is also likely to lead to a hole in the esophagus including a chest infection. Also, the child was finding it difficult to swallow anything, which made it difficult for her to swallow anything.” There could be many more problems in the future.” Dr. Manish Rai, Director, Manipal Hospital, located on Old Airport Road, said that “the child was immediately brought to the pediatric emergency and his treatment was started without delay. After all the necessary tests were done, the child was immediately transferred to the operating theatre. Our team of Anesthesiologists and Gastroenterologists acted immediately and were able to save the child.”
