After getting the approval of the law related to the amalgamation of the three corporations from the Parliament, this law is waiting for the President’s assent. Sources say that the President can approve this law in the coming week. After this, a special committee will be formed to implement this law.
There will be seven members in the committee and all of them will be such faces, who will know the working of the corporation and the rules and procedures.
With the help of the committee, the new law will be implemented more strictly in the coming days. Sources reveal that the formation of a special advisory committee has also been recommended by the leaders of the BJP in order to carry out the process of functioning for the corporations even before this arrangement. Because of all this, the MCD elections may be postponed till 2024.
This committee will try to overcome the technical problems being faced in the initial phase by establishing coordination among the three corporations. This committee will continue till the completion of the election process. With this arrangement, essential work for the general public will be prevented from stopping. It is to be known that recently the Parliament has approved a bill related to the integration of corporations.
For the implementation of this bill, the ward map of the corporation will need to be redrawn. For this reason, the elections to be held in April 2022 itself have been postponed. The round of meetings with the concerned officials has also started. Even before this, in the mid-1980s, the powers of functioning of corporations were given to special officers, although the advisory committee was not constituted.
As soon as the bill for the integration of corporations was introduced in the Lok Sabha, it was decided that now the corporation elections have been postponed for at least one year. At present, there are a total of 272 wards in the three municipal corporations of Delhi, North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC). Of these, there are 104 wards in North and South Municipal Corporation while 64 wards in East Delhi Municipal Corporation.
