new Delhi: Seven people were killed in a fire that broke out in the slums of North East Delhi’s Gokulpuri area late on Friday night. Officials gave this information on Saturday morning. A senior official of the Delhi Fire Service said that the information about the fire was received at 1.03 am late in the night near pillar number 12 of Gokulpuri village. After this, 13 fire tenders were dispatched to douse the fire, he said.
The official said that seven bodies were recovered from the spot. Around 60 shanties have been damaged and 30 shanties have been completely burnt. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Devesh Kumar Mahla said that the information about the fire was received at around 1 am after which police and fire department officials reached the spot.
The fire was brought under control at around 4 am on Saturday, he said. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has condoled the incident. He tweeted, “Received this sad news this morning. I myself will go there and meet the victims.” (agency)
