Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s party Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has got a landslide victory in the municipal elections in Odisha. BJD has got absolute majority in 95 municipal bodies out of 108 municipalities. In the 13 civic bodies, independents, Congress and BJP have won. BJD has won major elections in Cuttack, Baharampur and state capital Bhubaneswar municipal elections.
Sulochana Das of BJD got 1,74,562 votes from Bhubaneswar, while her nearest rival Suniti Mund of BJP got only 11,3419 votes. In Cuttack, Subhash Singh got 69,507 votes, while Congress’s Girbala Behera got 43,743 votes. Whereas in Berhampur, Sanghamitra Dalai defeated Congress’ nearest rival Majnu Rath by 6,768 votes.
BJD also topped the Mayurbhanj District Municipality/Notified Area Council (NAC) presidential election with three seats. Party’s Papi Prasti, Abhishek Patnaik, Krishnanand Mohanty won from Karanjia, Rairangpur and Baripada seats respectively. BJP’s Pramila Panda has won from Udala. Let us inform that the votes for the municipal elections of Odisha were held on 24 March. Over 40 lakh voters had exercised their franchise and over 12,200 candidates were in the fray. This is the first time that the BJD has got an absolute majority in 90% of the bodies in Odisha.

Let us inform that recently the results of Zilla Parishad elections were out in Odisha, in which BJD won 90% of the seats. The most important thing was that 70% of women occupied the post of Zilla Parishad President. In many big districts including Mayurbhanj, Ganjam Sundergarh, women were elected Zilla Parishad presidents.
