Navjot Singh Sidhu won in 2017 by 40 thousand votes. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is contesting the Amritsar East seat for the first time. When SAD was involved in NDA, then this seat used to be with BJP only. Sidhu was also in the BJP at that time, but even after joining the Congress, his influence on his stronghold did not diminish. However, in 2022, the game seems to be turning.
Amritsar East is one of the 9 assembly constituencies that come under the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency. This is a general category seat. The BJP’s influence in this seat diminished after Sidhu joined the Congress. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, in Amritsar East seat, Congress got 53.2 percent, BJP got 40.3 percent votes. Similarly, in the 2017 assembly elections, when Sidhu contested on Congress ticket, he got 60.69 percent votes, while BJP got 17.73 percent votes. It is worth noting here that in the 2017 Punjab elections, AAP got 14.77 percent votes in Amritsar seat, which seems to be increasing in 2022. AAP candidates Sidhu and Majithia are both trailing in this seat.
Amritsar is that seat of East Punjab, which has been occupied by BJP for a long time. Since independence, Jana Sangh candidates have been winning this seat for a long time. At the same time, Baldev Prakash of Bharatiya Jana Sangh became MLA from Amritsar East seat for three consecutive times in the elections of 1957, 1962 and 1967. In 1969 and 1972, this seat went into the possession of Congress. In 2012, Navjot Kaur Sidhu won this seat on BJP ticket and in 2017 Navjot Singh Sidhu won on Congress ticket.
