Fresh incidents of stone pelting have come to light in Himmatnagar of Sabarkantha district in Gujarat late on Monday night after clashes between two communities during Ram Navami procession. Earlier, several people were injured in clashes between communities during Ram Navami processions in the area. Police officials said that ten people have been taken into custody after the incident.
Following the order of District Collector Hitesh Koya, at present, curfew is in force in Himatnagar till April 13 under Section 144 of CrPC. Officials said State Reserve Police (SRP) has been deployed in the city to restore law and order. Incidents of stone-pelting between two communities came to light in Vanjarawas area of Himmatnagar town at around 11 pm on Monday, following which the police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd, officials said.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday morning, Sabarkantha Superintendent of Police Vishal Kumar Vaghela said- “After receiving information about stone pelting in Vanjarawas, police teams were sent to the spot to control the situation. Police also fired tear gas shells to disperse the stone pelters. We have detained 10 anti-social elements and FIR is being registered in the matter. RAF, SRP and local police have been deployed in the area.
Let us inform that on Sunday afternoon, there was a clash between two communities in Chhapariya area of Himmatnagar when Ram Navami procession was going out. More than 15 people, including four policemen, were injured in the incident, as well as some vehicles and shops were torched. After which a peace meeting was organized between the communities on Monday afternoon under the leadership of the Inspector General of Police and District Collector of Gandhinagar.
A 57-year-old man was killed in a clash between communities during a Ram Navami procession at Khambhat in Gujarat’s Anand district on Sunday afternoon. The police had detained nine people in the case and registered two FIRs.
