A senior official of the Delhi Transport Department said in a statement to the media that, in the coming days, the registration of petrol vehicles older than 15 years will also be canceled. According to the information, the number of such petrol vehicles is about 43 lakh, which includes 32 lakh two-wheelers and 11 lakh cars. The Transport Department has also issued a warning that if any deregistered diesel vehicle or petrol vehicle is found running on the roads, it will be confiscated and sent for scrapping.

In compliance with the direction of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Delhi government has deregistered 1,01,247 diesel vehicles which have completed 10 years as on January 1, 2022. “Such vehicles can apply for NOC online if they want to drive the vehicle in other state. The diesel vehicles that have been deregistered include about 87,000 cars and the rest include goods carriers, buses and tractors.
The Transport Department has also shortlisted 8 electric kit manufacturers for re-retrofitting old petrol and diesel vehicles ineligible due to the (NGT) directions. Officials said the department is also in talks with other manufacturers of electric kits and more of these will be enrolled in the coming days. Vehicle owners can get electric kits installed in their old vehicles.
How much will it cost to install an electric kit:
Experts believe that the installation and retrofitting of electric kits in old diesel and petrol vehicles will cost the owners around 3 to 5 lakhs depending on the battery capacity and the range they opt for. Experts said that depending on the type and manufacturers of batteries, the cost of retrofitting two and three wheelers will be lower.
