Incidents of road accidents continue to be heard on various highways and other roads of the country. Necessary steps are being taken by the government every day to reduce these incidents. In this effort, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has developed a free navigation app in collaboration with IIT Madras and digital tech company Map My India for driver and road safety technology across the country. Which will inform the people about the dangers of accidents on the road.
The navigation app service provides voice and visual warnings to drivers about possible crash areas, speed breakers, sharp turns and damage among other hazards. This initiative is part of the road transport ministry’s plan to reduce the number of accidents and deaths due to road accidents in the country. Let us tell you, this navigation service app named ‘MOVE’ developed by MapmyIndia won the self-contained App Innovation Challenge of the government in 2020. The service can be used by citizens and authorities to report and disseminate accidents, unsafe areas, road and traffic problems on a map and assist other users.
The data will be analyzed by IIT Madras and MapmyIndia and then used by the government to improve road conditions in future. Last month, the road ministry officially adopted a data-based road safety model developed by researchers at IIT Madras with World Bank funding. More than 32 states and union territories will use the organization’s developed Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD) model to help make roads safer and improve emergency response. The IIT team has tied up with various state governments to help develop a roadmap to reduce road accident deaths by 50% by 2030 and target 0 deaths from road traffic accidents.
