Telangana Police has filed closure report in the suicide case of Hyderabad University student Rohit Vemula. According to the closure report of the police, Rohit Vemula was not a Dalit, he had made a fake certificate of Scheduled Caste (SC). In its closure report, the police has also given a clean chit to Hyderabad University and said that no such fact came to light in the investigation which could prove that Rohit Bemula was forced to commit suicide. The police investigating Vemula’s death have submitted a closure report before the local court claiming that he was not a Dalit and had committed suicide out of fear of his ‘real identity’ being revealed. Cyberabad police, investigating the case, told the court that Rohith Vemula did not belong to the Scheduled Caste and they were aware of it.
Mother had made a fake certificate
Vemula committed suicide in 2016. The report said, “Apart from this, the deceased himself knew that he did not belong to the Scheduled Caste and his mother had made him a fake SC certificate. This could be one of constant fear as its exposure could result in the withdrawal of his academic degrees which he has earned over the years and he would be forced to face prosecution.” It said, ” The deceased was being harassed by a number of issues which could have led him to commit suicide.” According to the report, ”Despite all efforts, no evidence was found to prove that the actions of the accused instigated the deceased to commit suicide. ”
Police gave clean chit to all the accused
In this case, the then Vice Chancellor of Hyderabad University Appa Rao Podile and outgoing Governor of Haryana Bandaru Dattatreya were named as accused. In the closure report of the police, clean chit has been given to all the accused. The report has given clean chit to all the accused including Bandaru Dattatreya, Vice Chancellor Appa Rao, Legislative Council member N Ramachander Rao, ABVP leaders and Union Minister Smriti Irani.
Rahul Gandhi supported ‘Justice for Vemula’ campaign
At the same time, as soon as the police closure report came out, protests started. Students of Hyderabad University took to the streets against the police. Let us tell you that when Rohit Vemula committed suicide in January 2016, it became a big political issue. Opposition parties, especially Congress, had accused the Modi government of being anti-Dalit. The then Secunderabad MP Bandaru Dattatreya, Legislative Council member N Ramachander Rao, University Vice Chancellor Appa Rao and the then HRD Minister Smriti Irani were accused. In 2016, Rahul Gandhi supported the ‘Justice for Vemula Campaign’. Rahul Gandhi himself had gone to Hyderabad and talked about making a law in the name of Rohit Vemula.
